UBC 100

University of British Columbia

Time past, present, and future meet on the threshold of one hundred years of history.

Project Details

The University of British Columbia is a global centre for research and teaching, consistently ranked among the 40 best universities in the world. In 2015 the institution turned one hundred.

For the university’s centennial celebration we conceived a story where UBC’s past, present, and future converge on screen. We then produced split screen video that juxtaposes and connects archival and contemporary filmed images from every era of UBC’s history, taking the audience on a non-chronological journey reflective of the institutions timeless values. The idea expressed is that no matter what changes through the years, the values expressed by UBC remain constant – then, now, forever – a place of mind.

Historical archival audio clips and an original score, written by award-winning composer Terry Frewer and performed by members of UBC’s chamber orchestra, were mixed to provide a deep emotional backdrop and additional narrative thread.

The full video was presented to alumni and distinguished guests at a special gala event, on their centennial website at http://100.ubc.ca, while a re-cut version was developed to serve as a 30-second advertisement for UBC’s centennial celebrations.
