Frontier – Dark Providence

Frontier – Dark Providence

The interactive trailer that helped make Frontier a history-making hit with television audiences.

Project Details

Frontier is a historical action-drama series following the chaotic and violent struggle to control wealth and power in the North American fur trade in the late 18th century. The series follows Declan Harp (Jason Momoa), a part-Irish, part-Cree outlaw campaigning to take down his rival, the ruthless Lord Benton (Alun Armstrong), who runs the Hudson’s Bay Company’s monopoly with an iron fist.

Denman was tasked with creating a rich, immersive, interactive experience that could both promote the series in advance of its premiere on Discovery Canada and on Netflix in the United States, and serve as a digital extension for fans of the show wanting to dive deeper into the motivations of the characters.

An abridged walk through of the interactive experience.

Dark Providence brings audiences into the world of Frontier. It is a dynamic responsive website that presents six meticulously crafted films in which the character’s convey their ambitions, fears, motivations, and mistrusts.

Like any good trailer, the stories are cryptic, revealing just enough to leave you wanting more. But unlike a traditional trailer, this experience is fully interactive. Visitors not only get to choose the order of the films they explore, but within each they get to direct the visual experience presented.

Entering the site users are introduced to Harp’s murderous persona before being presented with the experience’s brand, navigational, and social share elements. A dark, moody soundtrack accompanies users as they scroll through a series of beautifully designed story gateway screens, each replete with playful gyroscopic (mobile) and mouse-based parallax effects to give a sense of richness and depth. After selecting a character featured on these screens, and entering their story, the audience is invited to interact with the video using the D and H keys on their keyboard. Each key activates different visual and audio effects layers within the video, which, in turn, exposes a deeper narrative truth in the story.

We worked with the show’s producers to script, storyboard, and art direct each filmed interactive scene. The film and audio production was done, with full crew and cast on set, in St. John’s, NFLD, while post-production VFX, interface design work and programming was completed across the country in Vancouver, BC.

Frontier – Dark Providence was developed with our creative partners at Switch United, series producer Take the Shot Productions, in association with Discovery Channel. It is broadcast on Discovery in Canada and distributed on Netflix around the world.
